SPS hosts a number of engaging activities during weekly general meetings. Below is a list of select past and current events and programs SPS has hosted.
– Connecting students during general meetings
– An Engaging Mentoring Program: SPS Mentoring program connects lower/upper-division students with upper-division or graduate students in a mentoring relationship where mentors share their knowledge and provide advice on various science-related topics.
– Textbook Lending Library: To be launched mid-winter 2023, the lending library will provide a few copies of commonly used textbooks from the core physics classes and is located in the Undergrad Physics Collaboration Center. (Thimann 103A)
– Midterm/Final Study Sessions: SPS reserves a room for students to study for upcoming exams and provides snacks. If available, class TAs attend to provide additional support.
– Research fair: Typically held winter or spring quarter, SPS connects professors with active research groups to students who are interested in participating in research at UCSC.
– REU Workshop: A two-part series that first informs students on what an REU is and follows up with more information on the application process
– Grad School Workshop: A multi-part workshop that informs students on the process of applying to graduate programs and provides feedback on personal and research statements
– Stargazing: SPS hosts a stargazing night and provides telescopes, allowing students to engage in viewing the night sky.
– Trivia and game nights: SPS creates a themed trivia event and/or provides various board games for members to play during a relaxing time.
– Forest hikes: SPS leads members on guided hikes through the beautiful forests surrounding UCSC.
– End of Year Physics Picnic: In collaboration with the Physics Department, SPS helps organize the physics picnic to celebrate the graduating class and other accomplishments!
